The flower engagement ring that Orlando Bloom gave Katy Perry when he proposed isn’t traditional looking, but it seems to be Bloom’s engagement ring style of choice. E! noticed that the ring Perry got is pretty similar to the one Bloom gave his ex-wife Miranda Kerr when they got engaged in 2010. Both have a center stone with diamonds around them. E! was told by Andrew Brown, President of WP Diamonds, that Perry’s ring was worth a whopping $5 million. “Katy’s unbelievable engagement ring from Orlando Bloom would retail in the range of $5 million,” Brown told the outlet. “What looks to be a 4-carat fancy vivid pink oval shaped diamond arranged with eight white diamonds around it to assemble a flower ‘in bloom’—this ring is truly one-of-a-kind and wildly valuable.”

But diamond expert and President of SuperJeweler Andrew Fox had a much more modest estimate. “Sorry to disappoint the $5 million ring estimators, but my estimation is that the ring is closer to $300,000-500,000,” he told ELLE.com. “Why? The stone is not a pink diamond unless it is treated. The center stone is simply too dark to be a natural pink diamond. The stone appears to be a pink sapphire from Madagascar, Sri Lanka, or Burma. The ring is either custom or antique, and there is no way to estimate the surrounding round diamonds, which from the picture could also be light purple sapphires.” Fox believes the ring has a three carat oval-shaped fine ruby with two carats of side diamonds in F color, VS clarity in 18 karat yellow gold.

Jewelers seem to have a wide-range of ring value estimates, in part because it’s hard to identify from the photo what kind of stone the center gem is.

Kathryn Money, VP of Strategy & Merchandising for Brilliant Earth told ELLE.com that “depending on the quality and specific characteristics of the center gemstone, we estimate the cost of the ring at approximately $25,000-50,000, assuming a ruby center gemstone. Set with a vivid pink diamond, which is a much rarer gemstone, the ring would cost an estimated $500,000 to $2,000,000 or more.”

And Grant Mobley, a gemologist and diamond expert, put the value at $20,000. “The white diamonds in the halo appear to be around 0.30 carats each, making the diamond halo almost 2.5 carats total,” he said. “This is a classic floral halo design in yellow gold, with milgrain etching around the diamond settings. The center stone is an oval shaped ruby with beautiful red color, it appears to be around 2 carats. Natural gemstones can be difficult to value accurately without seeing them in person, but considering the size and assumed quality of the ruby and the value of natural diamonds, this ring would certainly be worth at least $20,000. That value could go up significantly depending on the characteristics and origin of the center stone, which could only be evaluated in person.”
