Pete Davidson rang in the New Year with a quick standup comedy set in Boston last night, and apparently nothing was off limits—including his breakup with Ariana Grande.
E! News is reporting that during his NYE set, Davidson made a joke about Grande’s hit track “Thank U, Next” and how he didn’t know it was going to drop the day it did.
“Here’s the thing about the breakup song. Usually breakup songs you know who it’s about but you don’t really know. That G named all of us,” he explained to the audience. “Bam. She named all of us. And then, tells us, yeah, he has a big dick.”
In the music video for her single, Grande paid homage to Mean Girls and wrote cheeky messages about all of her ex-boyfriends in a Regina George-styled Burn Book. On Davidson’s page, she wrote “sry I dipped” and “HUUUUUGE”—which fans interpreted to mean Davidson is packin’ below the belt (he has Big Dick Energy, after all).
“That shit came out before I had to put on a fucking duck hat and be like, ‘derrrp here’s the pizza,’” Davidson added, referring to one of his SNL sketches. “So all my friends were there. It was a sad day. We didn’t know it was going to happen…So I start playing [the song]. And we’re all like, ‘Ehhh… it’s ok.’ We’re like ‘Okay, it’s not that bad for you.’”
Breakups aside, it’s good to see Davidson is back in the standup comedy arena. Just two weeks ago he posted an alarming and seemingly suicidal note to his Instagram before deleting his account entirely. NYPD was reportedly sent to Rockefeller Center (where Davidson was rehearsing for an episode of SNL that would air later that night) in response. Multiple outlets report that Davidson is spending time with close friends and family and taking extra care to safeguard his mental health.
