A Scripted Series About Selena Quintanilla Is Coming to Netflix

It’s been over 20 years since the tragic passing of Selena Quintanilla-Perez, but the incredible life and legacy of the Tejana singer continues to live on in music and pop culture. Celebrities have paid tribute to the singer for Halloween, and MAC Cosmetics honored Selena with a limited-edition collection. Now, 20 years after the Jennifer Lopez-starring Selena biopic debuted, we have another reason to Bidi Bidi Bom Bom: Netflix has greenlit a straight-to-series TV project chronicling the life of the late superstar.

On Tuesday, Netflix released a short teaser, which opened up with Selena’s most iconic song lyric, “Bidi Bidi Bom Bom,” and the official title of the show; Selena: The Series. “@SelenaLaLeyenda’s incredible life story is coming to Netflix as a scripted series! @selena_netflix was developed alongside, and will be executive produced by, The Quintanilla family,” the streaming service wrote.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Selena: The Series is described as a “coming of age story.” Moisés Zamora (American Crime) will write the script and executive produce the series, along with the Quintanilla family.

“Selena will always have a lasting place in music history and we feel great responsibility to do justice to her memory. With this series, viewers will finally get the full history of Selena, our family, and the impact she has had on all of our lives, ” Selena’s sister, Suzette Quintanilla, told THR. “We are excited to partner with Campanario and Netflix to give fans a never-before-seen glimpse at our story and highlight why Selena will remain a legend for generations to come.”

Before her passing, Selena earned her first Grammy award for best Mexican-American album in 1994, making her the first-ever Tejana female to win in the category. A year later, she was fatally shot by her friend, Yolanda Saldivar. Saldivar is currently serving a life sentence in a Texas jail.
