More detail has come out following initial reports that Selena Gomez was hospitalized twice in the last few weeks for an alarmingly low white blood cell count, a complication that can arise in kidney transplant patients. People reports that Gomez had a panic attack during her second visit and ultimately decided to seek treatment for anxiety and depression after it.

“She has had a tough few weeks and the panic attack in the hospital was the tipping point,” a source told the outlet. “She realized she needed to seek additional help for her ongoing emotional issues. She’s surrounded by close family and has a lot of support. She’s doing better now and is seeking treatment on the East Coast.”
E! also confirmed that Gomez is seeking treatment for her mental health and that there was a lot that built up to the decision. “Selena has been trying really hard recently to remain focused, and not let her health affect her,” its source said. “She has been actively writing new music, and moved to Orange County for a change of pace and a fresh breath of air. Ultimately, with all of her arising health issues, Selena started to feel super overwhelmed.”
Gomez is undergoing dialectical behavior therapy, both outlets reports. DBT is a talk therapy that focuses on helping patients strengthen their distress tolerance, regulate their emotions, be more mindful of themselves and others, and better navigate interpersonal conflict. Gomez has talked about receiving it before when she took her hiatus to focus on her mental health in 2016.
“DBT has completely changed my life,” Gomez said in her Vogue interview published last March. “I wish more people would talk about therapy. We girls, we’re taught to be almost too resilient, to be strong and sexy and cool and laid-back, the girl who’s down. We also need to feel allowed to fall apart.”
