Have you ever sat down for a bit of meditating and thought, “this is great, but it would be even better with a nice, cold beer?” Now that we’ve all raised our hands, I’m pleased to tell you that your dreams are about to become a crisp, refreshing reality.
Luke Evans, gentlemanly rogue and star of such hits like Beauty & the Beast, TNT’s The Alienist, and my dreams, has partnered with Stella Artois and the Inscape meditation app to bring you: Stellaspace. Stellaspace is a 20-minute audio guide that allows the listener to clear their mind and truly savor a beer like never before, narrated by the hunk himself.

Evans invited me (along with a group of other reporters, but who needs them) to try out his libation meditation in person, with no headphones to get in our way. Seated in a circle with our shoes off, Evans instructed us to breathe in the flavors of our Stella Artois and repeatedly crooned “sip, and know that you are sipping.” Don’t worry, Luke, I knew. It was right there on the limited edition Sip & Savor chalice!
Did I finish my beer in the allotted 20 minutes? No. Did I giggle when Luke Evans told me to “sit upright, not uptight.” Absolutely, and not just then. Have I mastered mindful sipping? Probably not. But I did learn the perfect foam ratio (about three quarters from the top!) and had a really good time. Plus, the beer and company were pretty top notch.
Luke Evans also took a little time to chat with me about the art of drinking a beer, the Alienist season 2, and the Evans’ of Hollywood.
You don’t live in New York, correct? Where are you living right now?
I live in London but I’m traveling to Italy right now, shooting a movie. It’s called Murder Mystery. It’s for Netflix with Jennifer Anniston and Adam Sandler.
Do you have any details you can share about that?
It’s about a couple who go on a very late honeymoon, ten years after they got married, And they end up in the middle of a murder scene on a boat. They befriend a very rich Lord (that’s me) who invites them on a boat and it becomes a complete…they become suspects, as do I and a few other people. So it’s quite funny but it’s quite brilliant. The backdrop is on a yacht in Monaco.
Sounds like a real drag to shoot.
Very painful to shoot. Really really bad. [Laughs] But the weather’s been amazing and yeah, it’s been quite lovely.
So, are we getting a season two of The Alienist?
I don’t know! We’re very excited to get the Emmy nominations. Six Emmys is quite a nice thing for a limited series. So who knows? I mean we did the whole book, so the whole story The Alienist has been shot. Done. Finished.
But there are other books. When you get to episode 10 you sort of really want to see more of the characters and we’d love to go back.
What would you love to see happen if you could write season two?

It’s interesting because the characters have changed so much from episode one, especially my character. [John Moore] really changes massively. He was such a hot mess and an alcoholic at the beginning, but he deals with that. He definitely finds his feet, my character. So I definitely think he would be more involved form the beginning of maybe another crime or murder or whatever it would be. So maybe he would be more assertive in the second season if there was one.
But who can say? I don’t know about him and Sarah Howard…I mean that’s something else, but I think people would like to see something happen there. But she’s an ambitious, independent woman so she doesn’t need any man to validate her existence on the planet so it would be interesting to see where everybody would go.
So speaking of alcohol, can you tell me a little bit about Stellaspace?
Well, once you listen to the 20 minute audio guide you’ll be quite surprised how chilled and calm you feel because it slows the process down of how you drink a Stella Artois.
It takes 20 minutes to appreciate the beer. And during that time, what it makes you do is you just take in your surroundings, the people that you’re with, maybe have a little nibble of something, all of those things. Which made me think, ‘Well actually there’s a different way of drinking a beer.’ You know?
If you could have a beer with any person living or dead, who would you have a beer with?
I think maybe Elvis. Well I’d have to first teach him how to sip it and not down it. I think he might’ve been a big drinker. And another one would have been Richard Burton. Richard Burton was a wonderful actor and also was a wonderful drinker so It might’ve done him so good to learn how to sip and appreciate a beer and not down it.
We make a big deal about the Hollywood Chris’s, but I would love if you could rank the Hollywood Evans’s. Luke Evans, Chris Evans, Evan Peters…
Yes! There’s also Evan Rachel Wood. Linda Evans.
Now that we’ve got five, can you rank them for me?
Rank them? What, in age? [Laughs] Talent?
Best Evans.
I’ve only met one of those Evans’s, I met Chris Evans and he was a really nice guy. He’s a top guy.
He’s above you, Luke Evans?
Absolutely. He’s actually quite tall. He might be a little taller than me.
So we’ve got Chris Evans, are you going to put yourself second?
Why not? And who was the other?
Evan Peters?
I don’t know who Evan Peters is…
He’s last then.
But this is a fluctuating list! We’re all hot sometimes and not hot at other times. [Laughs]
