So you’ve booked that flight to Charles de Gaulle, and now you’re wondering what to wear in Paris. You’ll be shopping in the Marais, grabbing lunch at Café de Flore, and taking in the art at Musée d’Orsay—but you still want to blend in with the chic Parisians. If there’s anyone who knows the winning outfits to throw on during your visit, it’s some of our favorite French girls. Curious to know what they recommend to blend in with the locals, we asked Sarah Nait, Anne-Laure Mais, and Sabina Socol to weigh in on the pieces they would recommend for a trip to Paris and the ones they would steer clear of.
We were most interested to discover some items they would ditch. Topping their list of pieces to leave at home are big bags, bright colors, and anything too form-fitting. Instead, stick to elevated basics like ankle boots, tailored outerwear, and vintage-inspired high-waisted jeans. And they’d even add in a leather beret—a typically cliché Parisian piece that’s making a comeback this season thanks to brands like Dior and Gucci.
Go on to shop three outfits that are French girl–approved.
“The coolest outfit to wear in Paris is probably the simplest one. Think less is more. A leather trench, a cashmere sweater, high-rise black skinny jeans, a pair of ankle boots, and a leather beret. It’s quite rare to see a Parisian wearing a very bold and colorful outfit, especially at this time of year.” This belted trench-style coat is classic and sophisticated. Perfect for layering during the colder months. Style yours with a tucked-in tee and belt. Show off these boots by wearing cropped trousers. Leather berets are so on trend right now. “The Parisian outfit formula: A black fake fur (but a really beautiful and super-soft one), vintage jeans to stay cool and comfortable, a deconstructed shirt, a small but original bag to make the look more interesting, and some comfy black boots.” Our favorite outfit is a white blouse with vintage denim. Wear this jacket with any outfit to stay warm. Vintage denim is perfect to dress up for a night out or dress down for a casual day in the city. Complete every outfit with this timeless purse. Wear these season after season. “For me, it’s very simple: The typical Parisian outfit that you see everywhere these days (and especially during fall) is a large sweater or shirt tucked into a pair of high-waisted jeans and worn with some stylish boots. That’s all! It’s my personal go-to, and I often see Parisian women wearing the same kind of outfit. If it’s colder, add a gray men’s coat: You can’t get any more Parisian than that.” The raw hem on these jeans makes them perfect to pair with any boots. Fashion girls style their knit sweaters with suede miniskirts. We love the lace detail on these boots. Rock this purse with a leather jacket for a fashion-forward look.
