Black Panther director Ryan Coogler has made a revolutionary superhero film – perhaps, argues BBC Culture film critic Nicholas Barber, the most radical Hollywood blockbuster ever.

Set in a vibrant African universe with an all-black cast that includes Lupita Nyong’o, Chadwick Boseman, Angela Bassett and Letitia Wright, its sheer number of distinctive female characters alone would be enough to make it a game-changer.

“As a Marvel blockbuster, Black Panther is vibrant fun,” Nicholas Barber says. “As a step forward in the way ethnic minorities are represented in mainstream cinema, it’s an absolute triumph.”
