Yesterday, we were treated to another chapter in “Awkward Interactions Between America’s Most Powerful Couple” as President Trump appeared to momentarily forget Melania Trump outside of the White House while greeting Czech Republic Prime Minister Andrej Babis and his wife Monika Babisova. Seemingly unsurprised by the snub, Mrs. Trump made like Atlas and shrugged.
In the video posted by Politico, one can see the President and first lady awaiting the Prime Minister’s arrival. The foursome greets each other and then Trump and Babis promptly turn and hightail it inside (the temperature was in the 20s in D.C. yesterday). This, of course, leaves Melania Trump and Monika Babisova to fend for themselves. It’s quite clear from their reactions that the women did not expect this particular bit of choreography. Melania even goes so far as to walk around the group so that they can more easily get into a straight line and walk in together like they’re doing a curtain call on a Broadway show.
As she has probably more times than we can imagine, Mrs. Trump momentarily expressed incredulity before literally shrugging it off. It’s that “Oh Donald” gesture that would probably bring the house down on a mid-90s sitcom where she was the long-suffering society wife and he was the bumbling dad with a shady friend Vladimir who was always getting him into hijinks.
It would air on TGIF and would run for 12 seasons and later be given a dark reboot like The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina that focused on the Trumps’ sinister children, Ivanka, Donald Jr., and The Other One.
Alas, it’s not a creepy, campy delight you can binge-watch, but just another day in reality. Shrug.
