As reported ahead of the show, Taylor Swift was awarded the iHeartRadio Music Awards’ Tour of the Year award tonight for her record-breaking Reputation world tour. (The tour sold over 2 million tickets in the U.S. and grossed $266 million, making it the highest grossing tour ever by an artist in the U.S. since Billboard started keeping track three decades ago, according to Forbes.)
Swift attended the ceremony to accept the honor, and made her first major acceptance speech of the year. In it, she candidly discussed how she felt seeing headlines that her Reputation tour would fail and gave her fans credit for its record-breaking success. She also let her fans know that they will know from her when new music is coming.
“I love your passion. I love your attention to detail. I love how much you care,” she said. “I love seeing all the things you’re posting online, and I just wanted to let you know when there’s new music, you will be the first to know. “
Here, her full speech:
Hey! So I think one of the most wonderful things about the way that this whole tour turned out is that for like the entire six months leading up to the first show of this tour, every headline that I read about the tour was, “This is going to be a massive failure. This is going to be a flop tour.” And you know, it really did wonders for my self-esteem. It was really great to hear people saying that I was going to be playing to nearly empty stadiums. I’ve learned a lot. I’ve learned a lot. And one of the things that I’ve learned is life is really unpredictable and people can make forecasts, and they can make predictions, but those predictions and forecasts may not come true if there’s an unforeseeable factor involved. And that unforeseeable factor in this case was my fans. So honestly, I honestly owe everything, everything in my life to you. And I want to thank you if you came out and saw the show in like, you know, perfect weather or if you came to one of our many rain shows that we had. And also if you—I want to say thank you if you watched the show on Netflix like on your couch with your dog. You guys are the reason why this tour—and the only reason why this tour wasn’t a massive failure and why it ended up being the highest selling tour in U.S. history. That’s you. And I also just wanted to say before I go that I love your passion. I love your attention to detail. I love how much you care. I love seeing all the things you’re posting online, and I just wanted to let you know when there’s new music, you will be the first to know. I love you so much.
