Over the last century, there have been various manifestations of loungewear—from the elegant peignoirs of the early 20th century to the silken co-ords of the ‘70s to the ’90s penchant for underwear-as-outerwear. Fast forward to 2019, and loungewear has taken on a whole new personality. This time, though, we can safely say it’s looking pretty high-end.
Fashion is clearly having a love affair with loungewear, but it’s not loungewear as you know it. The moment I saw that cooler-than-thou womenswear brand Joseph were stocking luxe tracksuit bottoms and souped-up sports hoodies, I knew something was shifting. I wouldn’t usually consider myself a lover of sporty styles, but there was something so undeniably chic about these camel-colored (ultra-comfy) pieces.
My suspicions were confirmed when I turned to Instagram and the latest street style shots from fashion week. Fashion editors and celebs alike were stepping out in knitted trousers, luxe jogging bottoms and cozy co-ords, but interestingly, these outfits looked just as expensive as the grandiose gowns and extroverted ensembles of their fellow showgoers. No longer the reserve of the sitting rooms and spin classes, these casual pieces were born to be worn with heels and chunky gold jewelry.
