Anybody who was watched You, Netflix’s wildly popular psycho-thriller series, can tell you that protagonist Joe Goldberg is a massive creep. Throughout the series’ duration, fans are offered a look into the mind of an obsessed man who uses his inner thoughts to justify and rationalize the disturbing acts that he commits over the course of the season. Viewers are so swallowed up into the mind of Joe that it’s relatively easy to forget what he’s actually saying out loud and what he isn’t saying at all.
To support this observation, Netflix uploaded a two-minute clip to their official YouTube channel on Tuesday to highlight just how quiet Joe is in You without his internal narration, and the result is…chilling. The clip cuts between an awkward scene of him and his girlfriend Beck in bed after being intimate, as well as a scene of the couple reading books together, all in complete silence. It makes you think: If Joe was so consumed with keeping his relationship with Beck afloat, wouldn’t he care to say a little more? The short clip also shows a brief interaction with Peach Salinger (Beck’s best friend) that he’s totally silent in too.
Perhaps Joe will become more conversational with his new love interest, Love Quinn, in You season 2. The second season of You is set to premiere on the streaming platform next fall, but feel free to watch Silent Joe below in the meantime if you’re in the mood to make your skin crawl.
You is streaming now on Netflix.
