Without mincing words, my hair is kind of my thing. I’m fully aware 95 percent of it is out of my control—it’s the hair I was given (thanks, genes!)—but the small amount I can take credit for comes down to avoiding the dryer and mass-ordering Oribe’s Après Beach Wave & Shine spray.
It plays second fiddle to the more cultish Dry Texturizing Spray, but I stand before you as someone with very good hair to say don’t pass this guy up. It’s worth every (every!) penny.
I’ve personally never gotten the appeal of the texturizing one, but Après Beach has honestly made my hair what it is. If there were ever hair awards that needed Oscar-type acceptance speeches, it would far-and-away be the first thing I thanked.
Between you and I, I’m typically skeptical of “beach wave” products. It could very likely be user-error, but I’d never found one that actually gave me sexy waves that stayed and didn’t frizz up or out by the afternoon. Just like meeting the right guy, Oribe changed everything. Some tips:
Don’t hold back when using.
I was first introduced to this product at a work event when a top hairstylist was giving me waves. He curled and sprayed, sprayed, sprayed, and that’s pretty much the exact same process I’ve stuck with. I’ve passed on his words of caution to multiple friends and coworkers since: You’re going to think you’ve sprayed too much and your curls will look a little crunchy, but it will dry and reveal wondrous waves. DO NOT PANIC.
Rely on a scrunchie for multi-day wear.
I prefer my hair on day two (day one can look a bit prom-queen, TBH), and the waves continue to subtly fall into something that looks more like perfect Gisele Bundchen hair instead of a curled-and-sprayed set. To avoid wrecking it overnight, I twist my hair into a topknot and cinch with a scrunchie when sleeping.
Get a good brush (and expect knots).
Since I have long hair and lots of it, the under-layer will inevitably lose the curl first and tangle itself into some very tricky knots. The second most-loved hair product I’ve ever found is this super affordable brush. I use it at the very end, when I’m starting to think all hope is gone, and it tames the did-you-get-too-close-to-a-light-socket look into something that’s closer to old-Hollywood waves.
