With all the original movies and TV shows Netflix has served up in the past year, it was only a matter of time before the streaming service announced the news none of its 58 million US subscribers want to hear: Netflix is increasing all of the prices of its subscription plans.
The streaming service is hiking up the price of its most basic plan from $8 to $9 per month; Netflix’s standard plan, which allows subscribers to stream movies and TV shows in high definition from two different screens at the same time, will increase from $11 to $13; and the premium plan, where subscribers can stream content in high definition and ultra-high definition on four different screens (and on your tablet or smartphone), will be bumped up to $16 from $14. New customers will be hit with the new prices now, while existing subscribers will see the increase reflected in the next few months, according to Wall Street Journal.
Netflix’s latest moves comes after a year cutting major deals, like the $100 million multi-year deal the streaming service madewith Black-ish showrunner Kenya Barris. What’s more, Netflix reportedly dropped $100 million to keep Friends on its streaming service after customers were convinced Friends would be leaving Netflix after the show’s page listed “Available until 1/1/19.”
The last time Netflix increased its subscription plan was in 2017 when it hiked up its standard plan from $10 to $11.
