When Janet Mock directed the Pose episode “Love Is Everything” (which she also wrote), she became the first trans woman of color ever to write and direct a TV show, and at the Golden Globes she simply emanated that trailblazing vibe.
Her clinging and fabulous white gown by Off-White had the word ‘Off’ printed on the front in black—a deliberate choice Mock made because, she said, “I felt like there was something about being invited to this show tonight. Our show is so on the margins, it’s about people who are on the margins, so we’re all a little ‘off.’ I think most of us are. I think tonight we’re actually ‘on,’ so there’s something about that message that I absolutely love. The fact that we’re invited to be a part of this moment and to be ‘on’ in this way I think is kind of amazing.”
Mock also said she loved her look because “it’s very sportswear and I kind of liked that. The idea of a bodysuit with this tulle moment.”
Ryan Murphy, who is behind American Horror Story, American Crime Story, and Glee, created Pose to honor the ’80s ball culture in New York. The show has the biggest trans cast in TV history and it was Globes-nominated for best television drama series. Season 2 is on the way this year; the action will jump forward into the ‘90s and build up to when Madonna’s iconic song Vogue was released. You can bet the Pose version will be epic.
