Today is Michelle Obama’s 55th birthday, an occasion that Barack Obama marked by sharing a cute Twitter and Instagram tribute to his wife. “I knew it way back then and I’m absolutely convinced of it today—you’re one of a kind, Michelle Obama. Happy Birthday!” he captioned the Instagram shot of them when they were just a young couple. The photo was a bit of a #10+YearChallenge flex too because the two don’t look too much different today, decades after it was taken—although Barack’s hair is grey. The stress of the presidency will do that to most.
The Obamas last shared sweet tributes to each other on October 3 when they celebrated their 26th wedding anniversary. Barack posted on Twitter first, writing, “Happy Anniversary, @MichelleObama. For 26 years, you’ve been an extraordinary partner, someone who can always make me laugh, and my favorite person to see the world with.”
Michelle retweeted Barack’s post and added her response to him there. “Thank you @barackobama for 26+ years of love, trust, and respect—for being a man who always lifts up and honors me and our wonderful girls. Each day I’m with you, I’m reminded of what a treasure you truly are to us all.”
Still, even the best couples need to put work in. Michelle spoke this fall about the two working on their relationship in couples therapy. “Well, you go because you think the counselor is going to help you make your case against the other person,” she told Oprah Winfrey for ELLE. “‘Would you tell him about himself?!’ And lo and behold, counseling wasn’t that at all. It was about me exploring my sense of happiness. What clicked in me was that I need support and I need some from him. But I needed to figure out how to build my life in a way that works for me.”
