It’s about to be 2019 (!!!!) which means New Year’s parties, fresh calendars, and possibly a brand new you. New York Ci-based hair colorist Stephanie Brown (a.k.a. the woman behind Kate McKinnon’s perfect blonde hue) played fortune teller and predicted the five biggest hair color trends for 2019, ahead. New hair, new year, new you.
Living Coral
Living Coral is the 2019 Pantone color of the year for its “life -affirming coral hue with a golden undertone,” according to Pantone. Brown thinks this year’s official shade is an edgier option from traditional soft pink and rose gold hair we’ve seen in the past. “The golden undertone enhances everyone’s eye color—blues and greens pop while browns look warmer—and softens all skin tones,” says Brown.
Shadow Roots
A great option for those with blonde hair is effortless shadow roots. Embrace your dark roots like Jamie Chung and nail the ultimate L.A. “cool girl” look. It’s also a great way to extend your hair color and skip an appointment at the salon (for now).
Cher Black
“As Cher is having a moment with her new album and her world tour, so is her iconic inky black glass hair,” says Brown. “The 2019 twist on inky black hair is rich and deep with a hint of blue.” This trick makes the black hair give off a reflective shine, kind of like glass. Think Lana Condor and Camila Mendes.
Snow Bunny Blonde
On the opposite end of the spectrum, Brown suggests a super pale, powdery blonde with a hint of blue, aka Snow Bunny Blonde. “It’s a very cool, let’s-go-to-Aspen-right-now vibe,” says Brown.
Orange you glad I said red?
Remember Lady Gaga in A Star is Born sporting a fiery orange-red shade? Brown predicts the orange-meets red shade will be all the rage in 2019. She points to other celebrities like Cardi B, Nicki Minaj, and Teyana Taylor as pioneers of the shade. If you want an attention-grabbing new look, fiery orange-red is for you!
