Riverdale Season 4 News, Casting, Release Date, Spoilers, and Rumors

Warning: Contains spoilers for Riverdale season 3.

Riverdale‘s third season is well underway, and it has been a game-changer to say the least. (Still not over the floating baby twist!) The show is going in an entirely new direction with the introduction of supernatural elements. Season 1 gave us the Jason Blossom murder mystery. Season 2 was all about the Black Hood. Season 3 has been focused on the creepy Gargoyle King and the mysterious Farm cult, but the addition of Netflix’s Chilling Adventures of Sabrina taking place in the same Riverdale universe opens up so many doors. Here’s what we know about the fourth season of The CW’s juicy teen drama.

Is season four confirmed?

The CW has yet to announce a fourth season, but it’s very likely to happen; Riverdale is a train that shows no signs of slowing down anytime soon. The core cast just keeps growing in popularity and the show has been pulling in some major guest stars (see: season 3’s Gina Gershon and Riley Keough). There’d be a huge void if the network pulled the plug at the end of this season, so expect to see your favorite teens back again next year—likely in the fall of 2019, if past season premiere dates are anything to go by.

Which cast members will be back?

Season 3 has put most of our characters through the ringer. Veronica feuding with her parents, Betty dealing with her mother and sister joining The Farm, Archie and Jughead fleeing town…and that was all just in the first half of the season. It’s probably safe to say that the main young cast (KJ Apa, Lili Reinhart, Camila Mendes, and Cole Sprouse) will all be back. We could probably also extend that to Casey Cott (Kevin), Madelaine Petsch (Cheryl), Ashleigh Murray (Josie), Charles Melton (Reggie), and Vanessa Morgan (Toni). Everyone else might not be so lucky. As seen with Hal Cooper (Lochlyn Munro) in season 2 and Cliff Blossom (Barclay Hope) in season 1, the adults seem to be the most at risk for getting written off the show. Secondary characters, like other students at Riverdale High, also seem to be expendable—RIP Midge, Joaquin, and so many more.

What’s going to happen?

This is fun to think about Here’s what we know based on what has happened so far in season 3:

  • Most of the parents (Fred Andrews is a saint) are out of control and their kids are getting fed up.
  • Magic exists in the world of Riverdale.
  • Our favorite couples aren’t as indestructible as we thought (Varchie forever!).
  • There’s a whole world outside of Riverdale.

This can all lead down any number of paths. First and foremost, fans crave a Sabrina crossover event. Sabrina‘s Greendale and Riverdale are neighboring towns. The first season of Sabrina made several references to its sister show and included a cameo by Riverdale‘s Ben Button (Moses Thiessen) as a pizza delivery boy. The network has been teasing this crossover, but they might leave it for next season.

The fourth season might also bring some major recoupling. Now that Veronica and Archie have called it quits, the writers have an opportunity to play with some new pairings. Veronica and Reggie have been getting very close as of late, and Archie has never really had any trouble in the romance department. With Jughead’s dad and Betty’s mom also hooking up, Bughead’s days as a couple may be numbered as well.

Speaking of parents, season 3 has made it abundantly clear that the grownups in Riverdale are shady, shady people. As Archie and the gang enter their senior year of high school, we will probably see the tension between the kids and their parents grow.

Lastly, the fourth season may continue to expand the Riverdale universe beyond the confines of the town. We’ve seen some of that world with Archie and Jughead on the run this season, and again, we know that Sabrina and her clique are having their own adventures in Greendale. With our high-schoolers growing up and graduating soon, it seems like the right time to see what else is out there.
