Oribe Canales, celebrity hairstylist and founder of the Oribe Hair Care line, died on Sunday in New York at 62 years old. The beauty legend was integral to the supermodel era of the late ’80s and early ’90s, creating high-volume hairstyles for Naomi Campbell, Christy Turlington, Cindy Crawford, and Linda Evangelista. He was a beloved and close collaborator with fellow industry icons like François Nars, Steven Meisel, Carlyne Cerf du Dudzeele, and Azzedine Alaïa. He is also credited with creating Jennifer Lopez’s look early in her career and working with her through her rise to superstardom.
Canales, who went by “Oribe” professionally, was born in Havana, Cuba and lived in Miami. His illustrious career spanned editorial and celebrity work, creating looks for runway shows of Versace and Chanel, and running his own salons. He launched his namesake product line in 2008 (then sold it earlier this year to Kao USA). Upon news of his passing, several of his high-profile clients, friends, and peers posted thoughtful tributes. Read them, ahead.
