Ariana Grande Teased ‘Legally Blonde’ and ‘Mean Girls’ Tributes in ‘Thank U, Next’ Music Video

Ariana Grande is currently working on a guaranteed-viral music video, one in which she pays homage to four iconic rom coms. Grande has teased on Twitter and Instagram that she’s shooting “Thank U, Next” and that Mean Girls, Legally Blonde, and 13 Going on 30 are three of four movies she’ll recreate in the video. (No, Clueless isn’t the fourth, by the way. She already confirmed to a fan that it’s because “it’s been done (and very well!) so we did some of my other personal favs!”)

Mean Girls was the first film Grande confirmed she was paying homage to. Grande not only shared a “thank u next” meme with Regina George, but she also made several references to the film in the photos she shared. “Meet the plastics,” she captioned one tweet, posting shots of her and her friends Alexa Luria and Courtney Chipolone.

On Instagram, Grande referenced Karen’s (Amanda Seyfried) iconic line about kissing her cousin (“yeah, but he’s my FIRST cousin”) in a shot of her kissing Chipolone, one of her best friends who she has a matching “court” tattoo with. She tweaked her caption slightly to say “she’s my FIRST cousin,” but the effect’s still there:

Grande did a spot-on impression of Coolidge earlier this year in May, which may have gotten the actress’s attention:

Grande shared her dog Toulouse will be her Bruiser, and she’s channeling Elle Woods. Her shot on the elliptical, with the location set as Harvard University, is very good:

Grande is just starting to tease the third film she’s paying tribute to, with a dollhouse image on her Instagram. Fans have speculated it’s 13 Going on 30, given in the movie, Jennifer Garner’s character Jenna is given a dollhouse by her friend Matt (Mark Ruffalo) for her 13th birthday and a packet of glitter wishing dust on its roof—which sparks the plot of her magically becoming 30 and having to suddenly live her dream life as a magazine editor with her teenage mind:

And Grande confirmed fans were right about 13 Going on 30 in her Instagram story this afternoon. That breakup haircut she showed off on social media last week? It was part of her channeling Garner’s role:

Grande shot the video over a couple days and wrote on Twitter, “I don’t know if I’ve ever been this exhausted. Ever. But these last three days were the most fun I’ve ever had. Period.” It’s not clear when the video will come out, but what a gift already.
