Both Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle had fancy state dinners today, the primary occasions a royal duchess can wear a tiara. Meghan had her first ever in Fiji, where she wore a blue cape Safiyaa gown, fancy diamond earrings borrowed from the royal family, and no tiara. Kate, meanwhile, attended the Queen’s evening state banquet for the Dutch royal family. She wore a blue Alexander McQueen gown and the Cambridge Lover’s Knot tiara. So why was only Kate in a tiara and not Meghan?

It has to do with dress code and personal preference, not their royal positions or husbands’ place in line for the throne, per Hello!. State dinners are slightly less formal than state banquets, so Meghan chose not to wear a tiara (and have it travel all the way from London to Fiji) for the event. A royal source explained to that outlet that in fact, there was no expectation for the Duchess to wear a tiara at the event” and that “she was suitably attired for a state occasion.“
Kate, of course, was at the fancier state dinner, which was thrown by the Queen herself in London. Of course she’d wear a tiara. Meghan would too in that situation, which will no doubt happen in the future.
