When will the second season premiere?

Creator Amy Sherman-Palladino told Deadline that the new season would be coming in 2018. “They’re being so cagey,” she said of the Amazon Studios strategy before confirming it would be “this year—they’re waiting for us to finish the show, it’s coming out this year.”

By the way, don’t sweat it—a third season has also already been confirmed.

What will the second season be about?

Sherman-Palladino told Deadline that the second season is “about opening Midge’s world up.” Deadline also suggested the possibility of an episode set in Paris, and one in the Catskills.

A big focus of the season will be Midge’s old life warring with her new life. Alex Borstein, who plays Midge’s hard-nosed manager and mentor Susie Myerson, told Variety, “I think it’s Susie with this new life, and Midge versus Joel and her family and her old life. And I think Susie is always on the edge a little, thinking she might go back.”

Even the actor playing Joel doesn’t know what might transpire. Michael Zegen told People that the Sherman-Palladinos were keeping things close to the vest: “Amy and Dan [Sherman-Palladino], the creators—I think they just want us to be surprised,” he said. “And I don’t mind that. I like that. As far as what I would like to happen… I don’t know if I can say anything without giving too much away. But I would just like to see Joel be happy.”

There will be more Susie and Midge, for sure. Per Borstein: “She’s pulled this woman out of the comfort of her life and said, ‘Trust me, trust me, let’s do this, trust me.’ And now it’s a little bit like, “Holy s—, this girl’s trusting me and her whole life’s in my hands.” And I think she’s a little terrified. They’re both terrified but trying to prop the other one up.”

Borstein also says we will see their relationship change up a little: “You want the odd coupleness of their friendship to be a through-line and be maintained…but you also want there to be fresh elements to it so it’s not the same and to keep surprising with things we haven’t explored yet between them.”

Who will be in the second season?

The main Maisel players will all return, including Borstein as Susie, Zegen as Joel, Tony Shalhoub as Midge’s father, Abe, and Marin Hinkle as her mother, Rose.

Per the Hollywood Reporter, Zachary Levi will be an addition to the cast for season 2, playing “an eclectic Manhattan doctor who suddenly starts orbiting the Weissman/Maisel world.” Jane Lynch will return in her guest role as comedian Sophie Lennon.

Is there any footage yet?

Yes! Amazon released a teaser trailer. It shows Midge cracking jokes about nuclear war and apparently competing in a beauty contest, Joel striking out, and Midge’s addictively prickly parents getting in her business as usual. Watch it below:
