Today the First Lady, Melania Trump, took a rare bold stand on an important issue through her spokesperson Stephanie Grisham. No, it wasn’t choosing a side in the Bob Woodward/Donald Trump feud, or the Drake/Kanye feud, in which the latter offered a digital olive branch early this morning. No, Mrs. Trump needs the world to know that she really does care about whether Issa and Lawrence are ever going to get back together on HBO’s series Insecure.

The statement was prompted by something Insecure creator Issa Rae said in an interview with Glamour. Reflecting on former first lady Michelle Obama’s professed love for the show, Rae said, “It was like talking to my auntie. It bums me out that I will never have that feeling again of the First Family fucking with us so hard and getting us. If Melania [Trump] said that to me, I would be like, ‘Well, I guess it’s canceled. We’re not making this show. It’s not ours anymore.’”
Bloop.
Never one to pass up an opportunity to troll, the White House momentarily took a break from trying to prosecuting anyone who doesn’t smile at Trump for libel. Stephanie Grisham tweeted out a link to a Page Six article about the Glamour article and added the note: “Alert: FYI @IssaRae, @FLOTUS likes your show!” with a television emoji. So, based on what Issa Rae initially said, the headline for this article (about a tweet about an article about an article) should actually read “THE FIRST LADY IS TRYING TO GET ISSA RAE TO CANCEL INSECURE Y’ALL”
Wild times.
I have Hella Questions about this, of course.
- The White House gets HBO? Who is paying for that? The taxpayers? I didn’t sign off on that.
- Actually, it’s pretty clear that Trump is using Manafort’s HBOGo password, right?
- Okay, I get that Lawrence needs to be out of Issa’s life, but how am I supposed to live without a regular Jay Ellis fix? HOW?!!
- What are the First Lady’s thoughts on Jay Ellis?
- Admit it, she has never heard of this show, has she?
Of course, Issa Rae came all the way through with the perfect clapback to Grisham’s bold stand. Half an hour after the First Lady’s team tweeted, Rae replied, “Melania or the double?”
Either way, both of them can catch new episodes of the show, now in its third season, on Sundays at 10:30pm, right before the President’s regularly scheduled Sunday Scaries tweet storm.
