In the most relatable yet egregious news you’ll read today, Republican Rep. Duncan Hunter has allegedly spent a quarter of a million dollars of campaign funds on things like Panda Express and dental work.
On Tuesday, Hunter and his wife, Margaret, were indicted on five charges, including conspiracy, wire fraud, and prohibited use of campaign contribution, according to the Washington Post.

According to the indictment, Hunter—who has also vaped during committee meetings—and his wife misused $250,000 in campaign funds on items such as a $14,000 vacation to Italy, a $6,500 trip to Hawaii, trips to SeaWorld, cable and water bills, iPhone camera lenses, brunch, the dentist, NFL tickets, golfing, private school tuition, food at Taco Bell, Burger King, Panda Express, and In N Out, a $250 plane ticket for a family pet, and 30 tequila shots and a steak that cost $462.
The Post also reports that the indictment said the two allegedly tried to come up with reasons for their spending that were related to the campaign; in one instance prosecutors claim they bought clothing at a golf course but reported it as “balls for the wounded warriors.” The indictment also states Margaret worked on Duncan’s congressional runs and was paid $116,000 from 2010 to 2017 for her services. A spokesperson for Hunter told CNN he believes the indictment was “purely politically motivated.”
Hunter is currently up for re-election this November, and his father, a former congressman, told KUSI News, “This is going to be a long, tough battle. We’re going to fight it out, we’re going to win and we’re going to win the election.”
However, ELLE.com’s resident snack expert, R. Eric Thomas, has pointed out that the man running against Hunter happens to be a grade-A, law-abiding morsel:
For so, so many reasons, the midterms can’t come soon enough.
