As the daughter of a Puerto Rican immigrant, Ocasio-Cortez kept immigration reform at the forefront of her campaign. She championed for the abolition of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency (ICE) and criticized the blind eye Crowley has turned to the districts’s diverse makeup.

According to Politico, Ocasio-Cortez campaigned heavily for Bernie Sanders during the 2016 presidential race, and pushed Sanders’ Medicare-for-all policy as part of her platform. After widespread criticism of Crowley, Twitter reactions poured in over night in response to Ocasio-Cortez’s historic victory.

“We endorsed [Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez] because we believe she is the future of the Democratic Party,” wrote Cynthia Nixon, who is running to be the governor of New York. “Today, she ousted 10-term incumbent Rep. Joe Crowley. Here in New York, the progressive revolution has begun, and we could not be more proud to be a part of that movement.”

CNN reports that this is the first time in 14 years that a member of Crowley’s own party has run against him, making Ocasio-Cortez‘s victory all the more extraordinary.
