Matty Bovan Gives Your Mom’s Old Coach Bag a DIY Makeover With Puffy Paint

Logo mania wasn’t expected at Matty Bovan’s London show.

The 27-year-old designer is known for his fluorescent originality, and beloved by industry leaders like Marc Jacobs and Katie Grand. His clothes are a fascinating pile of neon patterns and sequin shreds, and his style mantra goes something like “Fuck that, be you.”

Which is why it was funny (as in strange) and funny (as in ???) to see Coach logo bags on his Friday night catwalk.

Models like Adwoa Aboah and Winnie Harlow cinched the classic grandma bags under their arms, while other girls wore them as fanny packs (must we call them “belt bags” now?) and oversize wristlets.

Bovan had painted florals and patterns on them with old-school puff paint, then embellished the leather straps with pearl ropes. It was DIY-adjacent, but also really expensive.

The bags were paired with punk-or-posh tweed suits in Cruella De Vil colors, and massive ballgowns with yarn bodices (a smart link with show sponsor Wool & The Gang). Legendary milliner Stephen Jones topped the final looks with massive balloon headpieces that seemed to pop everyone’s jet lag.

Those helium hats and fuzzy gowns were show-stopping, but the Coach pieces, along with some killer bleached mom jeans, might be more practical. And given Bovan’s load of famous fans (Rihanna! Rita Ora! Barbie!) it’s probably a mere matter of Instagram snaps before they become A Really Big Thing.

Much like Mr. Bovan himself…
